Q: Why won’t my kids be responsible for themselves?
A: Because they don’t have to. Because YOU always are.

Many of you, out of good hearts and good intentions, actually do WAY TOO MUCH as a parent. Yes, I really believe this. It’s actually working against you and achieving the opposite of what you want:

  • You end micromanaging your kids, which sends the message that they aren’t capable of being responsible. They resist or shut down.
  • You end up fixing things for your kids because you don’t want to see them experience pain or distress. But your strong-willed kids are “stove-touchers” who need to touch that hot stove–because that’s how they learn best.

So by fixing problems or doing things yourself for them (actually, you are doing that for YOURSELF, true?), you are actually preventing them from learning how to be responsible for themselves.

So this summer, are you ready to break a pattern that’s been in your family for generations through the martyr mother or controlling father? Then do this.

Resign from your job.
Give yourself a pink slip. From a job you may have carried your entire life. That causes your kids to resist you. And that causes you to feel continually frustrated. This is just one of the 30 steps we take in the 30 Days to Calm Program.

It is NOT my job to control how my kids and other people act.
It is NOT my job to control how my kids and other people think.
It is NOT my job to prove my point and lecture.

Want your kids to be responsible for themselves? Apologize and say this, “I apologize for trying to control your behavior. From now on, I am going to control my own behavior and trust you to make choices that affect your life.”

Your kids will not remember any lectures you give them. But they will remember how YOU reacted in every situation. You teach by doing. Want to take it further?

It is NOT my job to make my kids happy. It is NOT my job to control my kids’ moods and emotions. This is a HUGE trap for you. You try so hard to make your kids grateful and happy. And it only makes you and everyone else miserable! When you are having a bad day, do you want your spouse lecturing, “You just need to be grateful.” NO!

Your new job is to control yourself, model and live out what you believe and know is right, with integrity and humility. So resign from that burdensome job of trying to control your kids.

Tell your kids this, “It is not my job to fix you, make you happy, or make choices for you. I trust you to make choices and learn from them…because YOU are smart and capable.” THEN your kids will begin stepping up and being responsible for themselves…as you step back and control yourself. Ready to be free?

The quickest way to change your child’s or spouse’s behavior is to change and control your own. Are you ready?
